As part of Fire Prevention Week™, happening from October 6-12, 2024, we are highlighting a critical tool that could save your life: working smoke alarms! The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) has announced “Smoke alarms: make them work for you!™” as this year’s theme. This message comes at a crucial time, as recent data reveals that most home fire deaths occur in homes without functioning smoke alarms.
Having working smoke alarms reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54%). Yet, sadly, about three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes that have either no smoke alarms or alarms that aren’t working.
Smoke alarms are your first line of defense in a home fire. They provide early warning and can give you the crucial time needed to escape safely. But here’s the key: They must be working properly.
According to Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy, “Smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, but they have to be working in order to deliver the needed protection.” This year’s Fire Prevention Week aims to empower you with the tools to install, test, and maintain your smoke alarms.
To help keep your family safe, follow these essential tips:
1. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
2. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. It’s easy! Just press the test button to ensure it’s working.
3. Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years or if they don’t respond when tested.
4. Make sure your smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities. Specialized alarms with strobe lights or bed shakers can be used for individuals who are hard of hearing.
By following these simple steps, you’re ensuring that your home is well-prepared in the event of a fire. Remember, a working smoke alarm is your best chance for survival.
This Fire Prevention Week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to review their home’s fire safety plan. Local fire departments, schools, and community organizations will be holding events throughout the week to promote awareness and teach fire safety basics. Make sure to participate in these activities and share the knowledge with your friends and family.
