Lithium Batteries: Charge Devices Safely

Charging your devices might seem simple, but there are important rules to follow to stay safe! First, always use the charging cable that came with your device. If you need a new charger, make sure your parents buy one that the manufacturer says is okay to use. Using the wrong charger can be dangerous.

Here are Sparky’s charging safety rules:

  1. Charge on hard surfaces. Never charge your tablet on your bed, couch, or under your pillow. Soft surfaces can make devices get too hot. Use a desk or table instead.
  2. Don’t overcharge. When your device reaches 100%, unplug it! Leaving it plugged in too long isn’t good for the battery.
  3. Charge big items outside. Things like e-bikes, scooters, and lawn tools should be charged outside on a flat, dry spot away from anything that could catch fire.
  4. Watch your cables. If a charging cable is damaged, bent in weird ways, or only works when you hold it a certain way, tell an adult. It’s time to replace it!

Following these rules helps keep your devices working well and keeps your home safe from fires.
