Prevent Fires: Take Batteries to Drop-Off Sites

We’re sharing a message from Pellitteri that was sent out to customers within the community. Their message is below.

On National Battery Day, Pellitteri customers are reminded that rechargeable batteries, regular (single-use alkaline) batteries, and any devices containing batteries should never be placed in their trash or recycling carts or dumpsters. Batteries can start major fires.

To reduce the risk of fire, consumers should follow these three easy steps to turn in their batteries.

  1. Tape the Terminals. Cover the ends of your batteries with clear tape, especially the contact points. This helps prevent sparks and keeps everyone safe.
  2. Make a Plan. Different batteries may need different return options. Find drop-off locations near you or order a certified safe return box. Most battery stores and Clean Sweep locations accept rechargeable batteries.
  3. Turn them in. Now that you know where to go or how to return them, it’s time to take action! Drop off your taped batteries at a local battery return site.

Battery fires pose significant risks to our employees, facilities, and communities. Pellitteri hopes that by sharing this information, we can begin to make returning batteries to a collection site a common habit.

In Wisconsin, battery waste generated by businesses must be managed as universal (hazardous) waste. Visit the Wisconsin DNR site for commercial guidelines
